Intense laser-driven electrostatic shocks and its acceleration of ions in overdense plasmas
We investigated numerically the formation and propagation of the electrostatic shocks in overdense plasmas irradiated by intense ultrashort laser pulses. The dependence of the initial shock speeds on the parameters of the plasma and the laser is explained by invoking the modified momentum conservation model. The acceleration of ions by the shocks is also discussed.

Multi-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are used to study the generation of electrostatic shocks in plasma and the reflection of background ions to produce high-quality and high-energy ion beams. Electrostatic shocks are driven by the interaction of two plasmas with different density and/or relative drift velocity. The energy and number of ions reflected by the shock increase with increa...
متن کاملAcceleration of Relativistic EM Solitons in Intense Laser -Plasmas
Relativistic EM solitons are localized structures self-trapped by a locally modified plasma refractive index via relativistic electron mass increase and an electron density drop due to the ponderomotive force of an intense laser light [1]. A train of relativistic EM solitons is typically found to form behind the intense laser pulse front. Relativistic electromagnetic (EM) solitons in laser driv...
متن کاملOptimizing laser-driven proton acceleration from overdense targets
We demonstrate how to tune the main ion acceleration mechanism in laser-plasma interactions to collisionless shock acceleration, thus achieving control over the final ion beam properties (e. g. maximum energy, divergence, number of accelerated ions). We investigate this technique with three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and illustrate a possible experimental realisation. The setup co...
متن کاملTheoretical studies of collisionless shocks for laser-acceleration of ions
Recently, strong effort has been done in exploring shock acceleration for the generation of highly energetic ion beams, with applications e.g. for medical purposes. The heating of a near-critical density plasma target with a laser, increases the electron temperature and excites ion acoustic waves, which can lead to electrostatic shock formation due to non-linear wave breaking. The higher inerti...
